Queer In: Mythology II

Okay, so unfortunately I haven’t been able to make any blog posts as of late (life sometimes gets in the way of these things), however that is about to change and I have a lot of exciting projects on the horizon. I know it’s a little late, but here is my next featured queer mythological figure!

Xōchipilli - Flower Prince

Xōchipilli was the god of art, games, beauty, dance, flowers, and song in Aztec Mythology. He is also known for hallucinogenic states of ecstasy, and is interpreted as being the god of homosexuals and male prostitutes.

For his design I chose to base it off his statue in the National Museum of Anthropology; I was influenced by Aztec art and patterns, as well as his symbolic ties to decadence, flowers and dance. The ancient depictions of Xochipilli showed him wearing a hollowed out mask, looking up in a state of ecstasy, cross legged and covered in flowers. He is also surrounded by mushrooms and wears stylized mushroom earrings.

Honestly, I think its a great set of things to be the god of (on top of homosexuality)- I would definitely see myself in the cult of Xochipilli (hopefully sans human sacrifice).
